WHY: Capoeira is increasingly gaining popularity in our communities and is appealing to our youth. A capoeira workshop is a fun and engaging medium to teach students about the impact of African culture through the world and expose them to one of the many arts part of the African Diaspora.

Developed in the 1500’s by enslaved Africans in Brazil, Capoeira (pronounced ka-poo-eh-ra) is a unique art form that blends dance-like movements, self-defense, acrobatics and music into a martial art. Masking capoeira as a dance, enslaved Africans were able to practice self-defense techniques which they later used in revolts against slave masters.

Capoeira served not only as a means of survival, but as a form of self-expression that would bring people together and help maintain customs they had been forcefully stripped of.
